Premium 80

Premium 80 is a premium grade polymer modified cationic bitumen emulsion. By using selected emulsifying agents with a suitable emulsion grade penetration bitumen it has been specifically designed for use as a hot applied surface dressing binder.

Being an emulsion of bitumen in water, Premium 80, when compared with the traditional anhydrous binders has the following advantages:

  • It is applied at the lower, therefore safer temperature range of 80°C to 90°C
  • There is a negligible fire risk and the hazards of fuming are minimal
  • The wetting and adhesion to chippings and road surfaces is excellent
  • The higher residual viscosity in the early life of the dressing provides a greater resistance to traffic stresses
  • The stabilised dressing is less prone to flushing up in hot weather conditions
  • It is more 'user-friendly'

Premium 80 is loaded into clean road tankers at or near the spraying temperature. Care must be taken during subsequent heating to ensure that the binder is thoroughly circulated and that the temperature does not exceed 90°C. Above this temperature there is a danger of severe frothing which may result in spillage and possible non compliance with the specification.


Premium 80 should be applied at the correct rate of spread to the road surface through a bulk binder distributor which has been tested for compliance to BS 1707 (hot binder distributors for surface dressing).

The surface dressing works should be in accordance with the recommendations contained in Road Note 39 and the Road Surface Dressing Association's Code of Practice and Guidance Notes. As a guide, rates of spread are generally in agreement with Road Note 39, Chippings must be uncoated, of good quality, dust free and conforming to BS EN13043.

Due to high residual binder viscosity, optimum results are obtained with Premium 80 during the warmer months of May to August.
